NOOCHRONIQUE : A race lost against a hurricane:
A chronological story of NooGénésis, born thanks to a cyberpunk hurricane named Frances…
In 2004 I was directing a 3d broadcasted advertising for a big french cosmetic group.
This kind of 3D computer graphic movie requires the production of thousands of images. 30 minutes each to be calculated on one microcomputer. To calculate the sequences in a reasonable time, I use a "renderfarm" through the internet, located in Miami: Renderking (24 biprocessors dedicated to the 3D software Cinema 4D).
On Friday September 3, 2004, I received a message from Dann, the owner of the renderfarm, who tell me that I should end quickly my renderings, because of a : category 4 hurricane report :

the storm will be here early saturday morning -
we will stay here during the storm - we are in north east orlando - but they have evacuated 2.5 million people from the east coast - so there is really no where to go anymore. the highways have been clogged since yesterday. we will be here and hopefully be safe. the worst part is we will have winds from 80 - 115 miles per hour for about 20 hours! that is a long time and i worry about the trees holding up that long.
watch your renders and get them downloaded safely!
i will email as soon as power and cable lines are restored - hopefully that will not be too long.

The following day, thanks to the link given by Dann, http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/, I could follow via satellite imagery the slow progression of the hurricane flying over the Pacific Ocean and moving towards the coasts of Florida.
I was caught in a surrealist race with a gigantic Cyberpunk hurricane running in the other end of the world.
Saturdays the connection with the renderfarm was broken. Almost on the other side of planet, the gigantic white spiral of Frances has disconnected Miami from Internet(amongst other things).

- "RenderKing actually did not lose power except for 7 hours from 2am to 9am on early monday morning. the farm kept on rendering the active jobs in it's queue during the whole storm. Internet connectivity was lost from sunday at just about midnight until just a few minutes ago when it was restored."

I made the first renders with renderking in January 2005
I use for the movie, a music of David Baque, rrupt.com (composer and director in video-games): "L'inverse des outils". Interpreted by its group "Beyond People" and which was distributed on a CD sold with the superb cyberpunk gothic fanzine of Laurent Bramardi: "La rose Noire" (The title " the reverse of the tools" was also inspiring me by reference to Mac Luhan)

NooGenesis was terminated and put online only in September 2006.
